Stick Javelin

A distance-throw competition using the most natural equipment imaginable.

Ages 9–122–4 peopleMedium energy15–30 minNo setupCompetitive

What you need

  • One straight, sturdy stick per player, at least 3 feet long
  • A marker (rock or stick) per player to track their best throw

How to play

  1. 1.Each player finds the straightest fallen stick they can — no breaking from live trees.
  2. 2.Mark a throwing line. All players throw from behind it.
  3. 3.Throw the stick overhand, aiming for maximum distance. Hold near the back third of the stick.
  4. 4.Mark where the stick first hits the ground (not where it slides to). Each player gets three throws.
  5. 5.Best single throw counts. Measure or eyeball the ranking.

What success looks like

Longest single throw wins.

Variations

  • Target mode: toss at a hula-hoop-sized circle drawn in the dirt — point for landing inside.
  • Accuracy round: throw for a bucket or a ring of stones at a fixed 20-foot distance.
  • Multi-round: three rounds, cumulative distance wins.

Safety notes

  • Set a clearly marked no-entry zone downrange. No one stands in front of the line.
  • Throw one at a time — never simultaneously.
  • Inspect sticks for sharp ends. Snap off any points before throwing.
