Pinecone Creatures
Add googly eyes and stick legs to a pinecone. You now have a pet.
Ages 3–52–4 peopleLow energy30–60 minMinimal setupCreative
What you need
- Large pinecones (one or two per child)
- Craft glue or a low-temp glue gun (adult use only)
- Googly eyes (from a dollar-store craft kit)
- Pipe cleaners, feathers, or small sticks for legs and wings
- Markers for faces and details
How to play
- 1.Each child picks their pinecone and decides what kind of creature it will be — hedgehog, owl, spider, alien.
- 2.Glue googly eyes onto the pinecone scales using craft glue. Let dry 2 minutes.
- 3.Bend pipe cleaners into legs, tails, or antennae and push them between the pinecone scales to secure.
- 4.Add any feathers, sticks, or leaves for wings or fins.
- 5.Use markers to add a face, spots, or stripes.
- 6.Name the creature. Tell a one-sentence story about where it lives.
Variations
- Full family: adults make creatures too — who made the weirdest one?
- Story circle: each creature joins a group story told around the table.
- Leave-no-trace version: skip glue, use only natural materials pushed between scales.
Safety notes
- Glue guns are adult use only. Cool-melt guns are safest.
- Small craft items (googly eyes, pipe cleaner ends) are choking hazards for children under 3.
