Movement
Pinecone Bowling
Set up sticks, roll a pinecone, and you have a full bowling lane in three minutes.
Ages 3–52–4 peopleMedium energy5–10 minMinimal setupCompetitive
What you need
- Six to ten straight sticks (8–10 inches, roughly the same size)
- One large, round pinecone per roll
- A flat patch of dirt or grass
How to play
- 1.Collect sticks and stand them upright in a triangle pattern in the dirt, wide end first — like bowling pins. Pack soil around the base if needed to keep them standing.
- 2.Mark a rolling line with a stick, 8–10 feet away.
- 3.Each player rolls the pinecone underhand along the ground toward the pins.
- 4.Count the knocked-down sticks. Reset fallen ones for the next player.
- 5.Two rolls per turn, just like real bowling. Highest total after five turns wins.
What success looks like
Knock down the most sticks across five turns to win.
Variations
- Closer lane: move the line to 5 feet for toddlers.
- Obstacle lane: add a curved path of rocks the pinecone must roll through.
- Team turns: parent and kid alternate rolls and share a score.
Safety notes
- Keep rolls along the ground — no throwing.
- Make sure no one is standing near the pins when a player rolls.
