Nature Scavenger Hunt
A printable list that turns a walk into a mission.
Ages 6–82–4 peopleMedium energy30–60 minMinimal setupExploration
What you need
- A scavenger list per kid (handwritten or printed)
- A small bag for collected items
- A pencil
How to play
- 1.Write a list of 8–12 items kids can spot or collect. Examples: a feather, a smooth rock, a yellow leaf, an acorn, a Y-shaped stick, something soft, something rough.
- 2.Add a few "look but don't collect" items: a spider web, a bird, an animal track.
- 3.Set a clear boundary for the search and a return time.
- 4.Send kids out in pairs. Adults shadow at a distance.
- 5.Regroup at the picnic table. Each kid shares their finds and crosses items off the list.
What success looks like
A kid completes the list — or finds the most items in the time window.
Variations
- Color hunt: find one item of every color of the rainbow.
- Texture hunt: rough, smooth, soft, scratchy, sticky.
- Camera version: photograph items instead of collecting (good for teens).
Safety notes
- Set boundaries kids can see from. Walk the perimeter together first.
- Tell kids what NOT to touch: shiny leaves of three (poison ivy), snakes, mushrooms, anything in water.
- Each pair carries a whistle. Three blasts = come back now.
