Improvised Bocce Ball
Find five rocks and you have a full bocce set.
All ages2–4 peopleMedium energy30–60 minNo setupCompetitive
What you need
- One small "jack" stone per round (any fist-sized rock)
- Four to six palm-sized throwing rocks, two per player
How to play
- 1.Mark a clear throwing line with a stick. All players throw from behind it.
- 2.Toss the jack stone 10–20 feet out. It lands where it lands — that is the target.
- 3.Players alternate tossing their rocks toward the jack. The goal is to land closest.
- 4.After all rocks are thrown, the player whose rock is closest to the jack scores one point for each of their rocks that is closer than the opponent's nearest rock.
- 5.The winner of each round tosses the next jack. First to 11 wins.
What success looks like
First player to 11 points wins.
Variations
- Team mode: two players per side, combine scores.
- Moving target: toss the jack onto a defined section of trail each round.
- Kids handicap: kids throw from 3 feet closer than adults.
Safety notes
- Do not throw toward other players, pets, or the fire ring.
- Spectators stand to the side, not behind the throwing line.
