Team competition
Human Knot
A group puzzle that feels impossible for about three minutes.
Ages 9–125–10 peopleMedium energy5–10 minNo setupCalm
What you need
- An open flat area big enough for the group to stand in a circle
How to play
- 1.Everyone stands in a tight circle, shoulder to shoulder.
- 2.Each person reaches across and grabs two different people's hands — not the person directly next to them.
- 3.Without letting go of any hands, the group must untangle itself into a standing circle.
- 4.Allowed: stepping over, ducking under, rotating grips. Not allowed: releasing and re-grabbing.
- 5.Success: a clean circle (or two interlocked circles, which also counts).
What success looks like
Untangle into a single standing circle without releasing any hands.
Variations
- Silent mode: no talking allowed — communicate with tugs and eye contact only.
- Timed challenge: run it twice and try to beat your first time.
- Larger group: split into two groups of 6–8 and race.
Safety notes
- Move slowly when stepping over joined hands — pulled joints are a real risk.
- Players with shoulder or wrist injuries should sit this one out or be an observer/coach.
