Quiet & wind down

Cloud Watching

Lie back, stare up, and name what you see.

Ages 3–52–4 peopleLow energy15–30 minNo setupCalm

What you need

  • A blanket or sleeping pad to lie on
  • An open sky with some cloud cover

How to play

  1. 1.Lay blankets on the ground in an open area. Everyone lies on their back.
  2. 2.Spend the first two minutes just looking — no talking.
  3. 3.One person points to a cloud and names a shape. "That one looks like a running dog."
  4. 4.The next person must find a different cloud and name a different shape. Go around the group.
  5. 5.Optional game: vote on the best shape each round. Three votes to confirm.

Variations

  • Story chain: each cloud shape becomes the next character or scene in an ongoing story.
  • Cloud ID: try to name the cloud type — cumulus, cirrus, stratus. Download a cloud chart beforehand.
  • Time lapse: watch a single cloud for 5 minutes and describe how it changes.

Safety notes

  • Never look directly at the sun — watch only clouds that are not in the sun's direct path.
