Blister Prevention and Treatment

Blisters are optional. Most hikers just don't know that yet.

When to use this

Before you leave the trailhead — not after you feel a hot spot.

  • Any hike longer than 3 miles
  • Breaking in new boots before a big trip
  • Managing hot spots before they become blisters mid-hike

How to Prevent and Treat Hiking Blisters

What you need

  • Moisture-wicking wool or synthetic hiking socks (cotton = guaranteed blisters)
  • Leukotape P or moleskin for hot spots
  • Properly fitted boots broken in before the trip
  • Blister kit: alcohol wipe, a sterile needle, antibiotic ointment, a bandage

Step by step

  1. 1.Prevention first: wear moisture-wicking socks, never cotton. Wool socks are warm but blister-resistant even when wet.
  2. 2.Lace boots snugly — heel slippage is the primary cause of heel blisters. Use the "heel lock" lacing technique on any boot with an extra eyelet at the top.
  3. 3.When you feel a hot spot (warmth or friction), stop immediately. Apply Leukotape directly to clean, dry skin over the hot spot. It stays on for days.
  4. 4.If a blister forms but is intact: leave it. The fluid is sterile and protective. Cover with moleskin with a donut hole cut around the blister.
  5. 5.If a blister is large and painful: sterilize a needle with an alcohol wipe. Pierce the edge (not the top) at two points. Press fluid out gently. Cover with antibiotic ointment and a bandage.
  6. 6.Keep the area dry and covered for the rest of the hike.

Pro tips

  • Leukotape is dramatically better than moleskin for prevention. It stays put through sweat and water.
  • Break in boots on 2–3 day hikes over several weeks before a long trip. No boot is broken in on its first outing.
  • Two-sock system: a thin liner sock under a thick hiking sock eliminates friction at the foot entirely.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing cotton socks — they hold moisture against skin and are the single biggest blister cause.
  • Waiting to treat until the blister fully forms. A 30-second Leukotape application at the hot spot prevents a 3-day problem.
  • Popping a blister at the top — the roof is the best bandage you have. Pierce the side instead.
